How you know you need this
The undertaking is approved, but nobody has the time to lead it throughout. The business unit cannot do it on the side, and IT is busy with operations.
Several suppliers work towards the same goal, none carries responsibility for the whole. Coordination costs more time than the work itself.
Status is unclear: everyone reports something different and you do not know whether you can deliver in four weeks.
What you get
- Clear brief: goal, scope, result, exclusions and success criteria, in writing and confirmed by all parties.
- Planning in work packages with effort, dependencies and owners.
- Steering of the team and suppliers: weekly sessions, decisions, escalations.
- Status report in a fixed format that is understandable outside the project.
- Acceptance of work packages with documented results.
- Orderly handover: documentation, open items, contacts, operations manual.
How long it takes
As a sub-project usually three to six months, as overall lead longer. Starting with a sub-project is explicitly possible.
What you contribute
A decision-making sponsor, access to business unit and IT, willingness for regular sessions.
What is not included
The technical delivery of the work packages. The lead plans, steers and takes responsibility – it does not program or build.
Common questions
Do you also lead teams that are not your own?
Yes. That is the normal case: existing team, existing suppliers, new lead. Technical leadership without disciplinary authority is a practised route.
What if the project goes off track?
Then the first task is to establish the actual state honestly – even if it is uncomfortable. Then: options with effort and risk, then a decision by management.
Do you follow a particular method?
PRINCE2 where it fits, with an ITIL reference in the operations part. The method follows the undertaking, not the other way round.
